FAQs
What is the difference between somatic therapy and traditional talk therapy?
Somatic therapy is a body-centered approach to healing that emphasizes awareness of your physical and emotional experience in addition to your mind, whereas talk therapy is generally focused on dialogue and cognitive processing. In my experience, tending to what is happening below our immediate conscious awareness is how we facilitate lasting fundamental shifts in the way we relate to ourselves, our loved ones, and the world around us.
How do sessions work, and how often?
Generally clients bring in a physical pain or life experience that they are struggling with, but can also bring in good things needing support too! I use a blend of felt sense awareness, mindfulness, compassionate inquiry, therapeutic dialogue, nervous system regulation, gesture, expressive arts, chair work, and imagery tailored to each client's process. The work integrates deeper with consistent repeated experience, so it is best to meet weekly or bi-weekly.
Do you take health insurance?
No. I am not a state licensed practitioner, so I am not able to take health insurance at this time, however I do offer sliding scale options, am part of a low-fee network, and will be facilitating therapy groups for a reduced rate in the future.
Do you work with couples, kids, or families?
Not currently, but I am happy to refer you to practitioners I know that do.
Are your dance classes like fitness classes that I need to be in good physical shape for?
While it is a movement class, it is not in any way a fitness performance. The space is held for you to explore different aspects of your body experience, and while I offer many guided and intentional movements, it is up to you how much you try them on for yourself. You are responsible for being mindful of any pain or injuries you may be bringing into class at the time.
